Recently, at Gaia Goddess Healing Holistic Wellness Center, I hosted an open house; offering a free analysis to help others get a jump start on their skincare.
I didn't find it too surprising that most of the attendees were not sure of their individual skin type; this is very common.  What I found more interesting, is that many individuals are generally unaware of the importance of a daily homecare routine.  So, I decided to write this blog post to help you understand how to properly care for your skin on a daily basis.

First of all, let me ask you one pertinent question. Are you aware that your skin is actually an organ? Yep, just like your liver or your heart.  In fact, the skin is the LARGEST organ of the body.  And it has an enormous responsibility!  It offers protection, regulates body heat, controls absorption, and eliminates toxins. Your skin is affected by so many internal and external factors; such as nutrition (internal) and pollution (external). And with such great responsibilities, it goes without saying, that you MUST take good care if it.
So, here are the basics.  In order to maintain the health and vitality of your skin, you should be following a daily skincare routine twice a day! Yes twice a day! I'll get to why frequency is important in just a bit, but first let's talk about the basics.
If you follow these 3 simple steps,  you'll see a vast improvement in your overall skin health.
Cleansers remove makeup and environmental impurities from the surface of the skin. When washing your face, it's important to use a facial cleanser. Avoid reaching for that bar of soap in the shower. Soaps are made with lye, an alkaline substance that will strip you skin of its naturally protective "acid mantle." To cleanse, choose a facial cleanser recommended by your esthetician to balance your particular skin type.  Apply a small amount of cleanser over the entire face and neck area.  Massage it gently for 30-60 seconds, moving your fingertips in circular motions; then rinse well or wipe off with a damp face towel or cotton pads.
Toners refresh the skin, remove excess impurities, balance the skin's natural pH and revitalize the skin with vitamins and minerals. After cleansing your skin thoroughly, apply toner to the face and neck with cotton pads or just spray it on and wait for the skin to be dry to the touch before going on to step 3.
Moisturizers hydrate and soften the skin. Even oily skin needs a light moisturizer. This will ensure that the skin does not overproduce oil. A little goes a long way! Place a dime sized amount of moisturizer in the palm of your hand. Using the fingertips of your other hand, dot the moisturizer at your forehead, your chin, your nose and your cheeks. Then blend evenly over the entire face and neck.
Yep! It's THAT simple!

Now, why is it so important to do this TWICE a day?  In the morning, it's important to remove the sweat and oil that builds up from sleeping with your face in a pillow all night. Your skin loses lots of moisturize overnight, so it's important to replenish it with hydration as you start your day. Your simple morning skincare routine will refresh you and give you the confidence to move along your busy day.
It's super important to end your day with your skincare routine as well, especially if you wear makeup. Milk Cleansers, like the ones I use by Ilike Organic Skin Care, double as safe eye make-up removers. Cleansing and toning will remove all of the environmental impurities the skin has been subjected to, such as pollution from cars. Using a moisturizer before bed will restore vital nutrients to the skin as well as keep it from losing moisture overnight.
In later posts, I'll be discussing more specialized approaches to addressing specific skin conditions.
